The Ultimate Saratoga Springs Weekend Getaway

My best friend—and co-author of this site—calls Saratoga Springs home. It’s only a three-hour drive from me, but it feels like stepping into another world the moment you arrive. She once came across a line in The New York Times real estate section that described the city as “an urban oasis at the foot of the Adirondacks”.

I make a point to visit every six to eight weeks, and every trip reminds me why. There’s a reason Dave Portnoy visits so often. Days are spent outside, bouncing from one activity to the next, soaking up everything the city has to offer—made even better by getting to do it all together. Below is a weekend itinerary from my most recent visit.

Friday Evening Arrival

Dinner at Cantina – 8 PM

We ordered the Diablo Short Rib Enchiladas and the Carne Asada Bowl, and both absolutely delivered. The carne asada bowl was hearty and deeply flavorful, with just the right amount of heat. The fajita-spiced steak was clearly quality and well-seasoned.

The Diablo Short Rib Enchiladas were the real standout. They’re unlike anything I’ve seen on a menu before, and easily something I’d come back for. The braised short rib is rich and melt-in-your-mouth, perfectly balanced by sweet caramelized onions and bold, smoky flavors. It’s the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite. And the margaritas? Not to be missed.

After dinner, we headed home, queued up our favorite Netflix shows, and called it a night.

Saturday

Saratoga Sweat Workout Class – 10 AM

What better way to kick off a weekend morning than sweating it out in a hot workout class? I was so excited to finally try Saratoga Sweat, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The studio’s owner, Kat, is warm, motivating and a good reminder of why you showed up (and why you should make the most of every minute there). The hour-long class was a full-body burn, working every single muscle and leaving me feeling accomplished and very ready for coffee.

Kru Coffee – 11:30 AM

Morning coffee is non-negotiable. We simply cannot function without it. Enter Kru, our go-to for both excellent coffee and a truly solid breakfast (a rare combination). Whether you’re in the mood for iced or hot, they do both well.

My order never wavers: a large cold brew and the Smokey and the Biscuit sandwich. Think maple sausage, smoked gouda, two eggs, all tucked into a warm, flaky biscuit. It’s exactly what you want after a workout. Need I say more?

Railroad Run – 2 PM

Saratoga’s Railroad Run is a peaceful, forest-lined trail that feels like a breath of fresh air. Perfect for runners, walkers and bikers alike, it’s beautifully shaded and lush with greenery. We opted for a walk, and the half-mile stretch made it an easy (and scenic) way to rack up steps while soaking in a little nature.

Explore Broadway – 4 PM

Broadway has a little something for everyone. Current favorites?

  • Northshire Bookstore – A spacious haven for book lovers, stocked with trending reads and plenty of enticing puzzles to challenge your mind.
  • Bobbles & Lace – I was bummed to learn this is a chain, but their coats are fabulous and reasonably priced (pictured above). Definitely worth a peek!
  • Saratoga Outdoors – The ultimate destination for outdoor adventurers. Whether you love skiing, biking, or hiking, you’ll find all the gear you could ever need.
  • Saratoga Olive Oil Co. – Who knew espresso-flavored balsamic vinegar could double as a makeshift affogato? It’s incredible. Their peach balsamic is another standout, perfect for bread or a fresh summer salad.
  • Overland Sheepskin Co. – If money is no object, this is the place to invest in a winter coat. The quality here is simply unmatched.

Hamlet & Ghost – 6 PM

Craving inventive cocktails and standout appetizers? This spot delivers with a truly one-of-a-kind, seasonal drink menu—I’ve honestly never seen anything like it. Arrive early, though, because it fills up fast and seating is limited. I’ll never forget going one holiday and sipping their spiked eggnog cocktails. We still talk about them to this day! As for the food, the cheese curds and fries are fabulous, served in generous, heaping portions that are perfect for sharing—or not.

Dinner at Cafe Italia Ristorante – 8 PM

This charming restaurant strikes the perfect balance between upscale and welcoming, with attentive service and delicious food. The blood orange margarita is an absolute must-try, and we can’t get enough of the linguine alla vongole—it’s our personal favorite. From salads to decadent desserts, everything is thoughtfully prepared with quality ingredients. You really can’t go wrong here.

Sunday

Darling Donuts and Coffee – 10 AM

We’re big fans of donuts, and this spot does not disappoint. There’s a flavor for every craving. After grabbing our treats, we set out for a walk.

Pitney Meadows Community Farm – 12 PM

We took a stroll through this beautiful farm, following a designated trail that winds through tall grasses, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a private maze. It’s the perfect way to disconnect from your phone and just focus on how you’re feeling. You might feel a little lost at first, but trust the trail. The farm also has a stand with fresh vegetables and produce from their fields and neighboring farms, perfect for taking a taste of the season home with you.

Afterward, it was time for me to head back to Connecticut. I can’t wait to return in the next few weeks and spend time with my best friend.
