I adopted a little black cat over the summer and I’m obsessed. Her name is Margarita and she’s all settled in just in time for Halloween.
Based on my adoption experience with Kitten Angels Rescue at PetSmart, here’s how to adopt a cat:
- Find the pet you’re interested in (online or through in-store visits).
- Fill out the paper or online application.
- You’ll want to say no when asked if you’ll let your cat go outside.
- Indicate “no budget” or at least about $1,000 per year on veterinary care. Margarita’s two post-adoption appointments ran at $280 and $500, ensuring she’s healthy for her mischievous adventures.
- The adoption center will contact you to let you know whether your application has been approved or to conduct further screening, along with scheduling a meet and greet. A meet and greet is important to ensure your potential partner in crime is a good fit. I was originally interested in another kitten, but Margarita spoke to me more when we met.
- Have cash or a check in the amount of the adoption fee ready. Margarita’s was $175.
- If all goes well, to take your pet home you’ll need a litter box, food, and a carrier ready to go.
- Keep your cat isolated in a specific room for their comfort while they’re introduced to your home and until you confirm with a vet that they don’t have parasites.
- Schedule a check-up with a vet ASAP. Some health conditions to check include worms (parasites that can be highly contagious to other pets and, in rare cases, humans without proper precautions), leukemia, AIDS, and more. These check-ups are important to keep your little companion strong and healthy. Margarita had roundworms so I followed the care instructions provided by the vet to get rid of them. It was tedious so be sure to isolate to make the process easier!
It’s been nearly 3 months, and Margarita is thriving, ruling the house like a tiny witch queen. I’m basically her emotional support human because she loves to be near me. As much as she wants to be around me she also amuses herself by batting toys around the house or lounging by whatever window has the best view. She’s done well when I’ve left her home alone for a couple of days, thanks to her water fountain and automatic feeder. I’m so happy with my decision to adopt a kitten and look forward to all of our adventures together.
